Individual Learning Support / SEN

Roselyn House School values the abilities and achievements of all its students, and is committed to providing for each student, irrespective of ability, gender and race, a happy and caring environment in which they can develop their full potential. We provide a nurturing environment for young people in which to recognise their individual needs and grow.

We are committed to inclusion. We plan to develop cultures, policies and practices that include all our learners. We aim to engender a sense of community and belonging, and to offer new and positive opportunities to learners who may have experienced previous difficulties.

This does not mean that we treat all learners in the same way, but that we will respond to learners in ways which take account of their varied life experiences and needs.

We recognise that students learn at different rates and that there are many factors affecting achievement, including ability, emotional state, age and maturity. We recognise that students need to want to learn. This is overcome by individually designed packages which aim to integrate a young person back into learning and by doing so improve independence and promote self-respect. This is supported by our SENCO.

Encouraging Independence

Roselyn House School is keen to develop independence within our students. Some students enter the school distrusting adults/ peers and may require additional support to move them forwards. This is achieved by developing strategies in the students IEBP and Personal Learning Plan. We realise that students develop at differing rates and individual interventions need to be put into place in an individualised approach to learning.

We encourage, support and train for real life experiences in terms of community, transport, life skills, work experience and vocational placements. These are guided by the needs of the young people and flexible in their approach.

Students, where appropriate are encouraged to participate in Independent, individual or partnered study sessions in addition to class lessons; where they have access to revision materials and/ or a tutor to help prepare them for GCSE. In these sessions they are responsible for organising their own study.

Students are given access to laptops/ PC; where they are encouraged to research topics they are studying. Research is set as homework and challenges for finding out information at break times.

Form Tutors

Students are assigned a Form Tutor who is their mentor and the initial direct communication to Roselyn House School for Parents and Carers. Tutor time provides opportunities for students to talk about their thoughts and feelings and discuss issues they may be experiencing. This provides opportunities to support wellbeing and Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning.

Therapy

We have therapists on site which includes play therapy, neuro-affirming sessions, child counselling, walk-and-talk therapy and person-centred approaches. We also have a Speech and Language therapist. These therapists are BACP qualified.

Homework

Homework is set and is advantageous to further develop our students learning in all Key Stages.

Charity Events

Students are encouraged throughout the school Year to participate in charity days and organise events. They have raised money for various charities by making things, fancy dress, sponsored activities and fetes. These have been open to the public, parents and carers. This has also included enterprise pop up shops.

Focus Days

Each month there are planned events in the school calendar which look at World events, topics, charity, issues that affect us all, health and specific memorable days. These are explored in lessons and through fun activities.
